PAY OF SHEARERS
WANGANUI FARMERS’ VIEW SUPPORT FROM WELLINGTON. PALMERSTON N., Oct. 15. It was agreed by the meeting of the Wellington Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union to support th<> Wanganui Provincial Executive’s decision that the shearing rates for the coming season shall be 17s 6d a hundred. Air L. Hammond (president) stated that Wanganui had agreed upon thi’ rate and special meetings of farmers at Taihape and Ilunterville had also decided that this was a fair rate having in view the prevailing prices for wool and the generally depressed condition of tho farming industry. Tt was pointed out bv Air W. L. Grice that the Sheepowners’ Federation had suggested that the rate be 18s, and he thought that this should be agreed upon. Afembers, however, were of the opinion that the rate of 17s 6d was sufficient. In the South Island 18s would be a fair price, because the sheep there wore harder to shear. Tt was agreed to support the rate of 17s fid a hundred, and where the shearers wore not found to pay 15s a week for “keep.’’ Mr D. Scott raised the question of the cost of combs and cutters. The cost, he submitted, was prohibitive, and he thought the union should take action. It was agreed to endeavour to obtain a substantial reduction in tho prices charged.
