Air. B. Grant, stock inspector, Palmerston North, is reported to be making progress from a recent serious ill ncss. Failing health has compelled Air. James Young, curator of the Christ church Botanic Gardens for the past _5 y<fars, to tender his resignation to the Domains Board. The Rev. F. J. Parker, Methodist minister at Frankton, has been appointed to Avondale. The Rev. F. Hayman, late of the Solomon Islands, has been invited to succeed Air. Parker. Dr. Leslie Burnett spent the weekend in Wanganui en route for Auckland, where ho joined the Alaimoa as ship’s surgeon. Dr. Burnett will be absent from the Dominion for 15 months and will pursue his medical studios at London and Edinburgh. The following are guests at Foster’s Hotel: Air and Airs Ralph Bcetham and Alisa Violet Hutchison (Masterton); Dr. Clifford Alacphorson (Dunedin); Aliss B. Landels (Hastings); Mrs Brandon, Mr J. C. Crawford, Air N. R. Gunn, and Mr C. H. Andrews (Wellington); Mr E. J. Reid (Wanganui); Air and Airs F. D. Herrick (Hawke’s Bay). Ihe death occurred suddenly on Thursday at his residence, Queenswood Road, Levin, of Air. Henry Humphreys. He was attending to his duties and appeared to be in his usual health when he collapsed. Air. Humphreys, who was 53 years of age, had been in the em ploy of the Levin Dairy Company for about 14 years, and was a highly valued servant. He was well known in the Rangitikci, having been a resident of Rata for many years. He leaves a widow and family of five grown-up children, throe sons and two daughters.

Air. J. Newman Barker, for reasons of health, has resigned his seat on the Australian board in Melbourne of the New Zealand Loan and Afercantile Agency Company Ltd. Mr. Barker has had a long association with the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company Ltd. He joined its service in London in 1874 and was transferred to Australia in 1889. In 1903 he was appointed chief inspector of Australia, and upon his retirement in 1912 he became a member of the Alelbourne board. In .1917 he was appointed chairman of the board, which position he held until 1928 Since that date he has been deputy-chairman.
