RYE GRASS IN TASMANIA

The Tasmanian Agricultural Depart ment is taking action to improve the rye grass grown in the island State. The case for the Hawke’s Bay certified seed has been stressed for some time, but now thy department is certifying locally pure seed for local sowings, which will mean a saving to the purchasers and profit to the producers. Batches of a prolific strain have been found on many farms ami the depart ment is urging farmers to use the certified local product. This seed question is vital to the dairy farmers’ interests, as observation has borne out the departmental contention that seed “just as good” is not worth sowing, and moans, in fact, disappointing pasture where there should be healthy and active growth.
