THE VEGETABLE GARDEN
Earth up and stake peas and make | successional sowings. Alsu make sow- i ings of dwarf and runner beans. Complete the planting of autumn ! sown onions, making the soil firm around the plants. In growing summer lettuce the depth of soil is important. The best method is to open out trenches and place in a good dressing of manure or decayed vegetable matter. Failing this, superphosphate is a good fertiliser for lettuce. Earth up and spray potatoes. The spraying should be commenced soon after they appear above ground, and at reasonable intervals during their growth. Prepare the plots intended for growing melons, kumaras, Cape gooseberries, egg plants, and other tender plants. Plant tomatoes in a well-sheltered position. If exposed, shelter th© plants with kerosene tins until they are well hardened. Sowings may still be made of carrots, beet, spinach, salsify, lettuce, silver beet, leeks, onion for pickling. Also sage, thyme, majoram, parsley and other herbs. Sweet corn may be sown any time during the present month.
