“MERELY MARY ANN"
FEATURES AT DUCHESS FUTURE BOOKINGS Whatever the film, reasonably goodj good or otherwise, Janet Gaynor and ( hades Farrell are extremely popular. Whatever cynics might say, the world still loves a romance, and these two make the best romantic couple on the screen. There seems to be some factor in personality ano also in acting that makes them popular even apart from the lomantic angle, and for that reason “Merely Alary Ann,” now' showing at the Duchess Theatre, should do good business. With a good story and with Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell in the leading roles, the production should draw a good attendance at both sessions to-day. The programme at the Duchess Theatre for Wednesday and Thursday will include two pictures, “Men Like Those” and “Fascination.” Both are products of British International Pictures. “Men Like These” is a story of tho submarine service. One might almost say it is a history of thp submarine service, since evidently it was inspired by the tragedy of the Poseidon, which excited the pity and admiration of the civilised world. It is a talc of compelling drama, and by its sincerity it boars the imprint of overwhelming reality. “Fascination” stars Madeleine Carroll in her first “vamp” part, together with Dorothy Bartlam and Carl Harbord. This is a sophisticated marital drama of a husband’s lapse from grace with an
actress, and of his wife’s novel method of winning him back. The wife discovers her husband’s infidelity when she reads a letter the actress has been undiplomatic enough to send to his flat. But instead of stirring up a furious row, as most film wives do in similar circumstances, his wife acts in a highly ingenious way. A treat for lovers of mystery dramas is promised when “Charlie Chan’s ( hance,” the Fox picture, is showing at the Duchess Theatre next Friday and Saturday. Warner Gland portrays the role of the brilliant Chinese detective who solves an intricate murder mystery, and the cast includes such well-known favourites as Alexander Kirkland, H. B. Warner, Alarian Nixon, Ralph Morgan, Linda Watkins, Janies Kirkwood and James Todd. Jeanette MacDonald was Quern of [the 1 rench Bastille Day celebrations in San Francisco this year. The FrancoAmericans hold her in high esteem. A irginia Bruce, who recently became Airs. John Gilbert and who plays opposite John Gilbert in the latter’s new picture, “Downstairs,” has signed a now long-term contracts with MetroGold wyn-Alayer.
