MANAWATU COUNTY

GROUP TRAFFIC INSPECTOR. In submitting a report on the operations of the Group Traffic Inspector (Mr. W. Berry) for the past six months, Mr. A. K. Drew stated that the total mileage was 7061. The offences detected in the various counties numbered 115, the-details were as follows:—Manawatu 18, Kairanga 54, Oroua 30, Kiwitea 11, Pohangina 2. The total fines collected were £lO2 15s, distributed as follows: —Manawatu £3l ss, Kairanga £3O, Oroua £2B, Kiwitea £9 10s, Pohangina £4. The last report stated that 57 cases were pending, the fines from these were distributed as follows: —Manawatu £1 10s, Kairanga £4, Oroua £47 ss. Particulars of the different offences are as follows: Failing to obtain H.T. licenses .. 3 Loading in excess of classification 7 Using wrong number plates .... 2 Driving without licenses 54 Cutting inside white lines .. .. 23 No lights on vehicles 2 No rear vision mirror 2 Wandering stock on highways ~ 17 Sundry 5 At the request of the Commissioner of Transport and with the consent of the Highways Board and the councils represented, the operations of the inspector have been extended to include the suprvision of passenger services coming under the Transport Licensing Act, within this district. Regarding the question of pooling of fines, this matter has been brought before the Minister by other local bodies who are operating under the group traffic control scheme, but up to date nothing has been done. Makowhai Camp. At Tuesday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council it was reported that the allocation for the Mokowhai camp had ben reduced. Cr. Perrett said that in other districts considerable assistance was given by the settlers in the way of donations of moat, vegetables, etc. He had doubts that similar assistance would be available from the settlers interested. It was decided to place the facts before the settlers and Cr. Perrett accepted the responsibility of calling a meeting. Votes of Sympathy. Sympathy with the relatives of the late Air. H. Bond (Rangiotu), Mr. H. Behrent (Makowhai) and Mrs. F. C. Burgess (Rongotea) was expressed by members and a motion was carried in the usual manner. A vote of sympathy with the chairman (Mr. W. E. Barber) in his indisposition was carried and hopes were expressed for a speedy recovery. Sanson Mail Service. A letter from the secretary of the Postal Department in connection with an improved mail service was read. Cr. Perrett stated that he had been informed that, the mail from Sanson went direct to Palmerston North. The matter was left in the hands of Mr. A. K. Drew for further inquiry.
