MANAWATU HUNT CLUB
MEETING AT AWAPUNI SATURDAY’S PROGRAMME. (By “Kestrel”) Paving the way for the opening of the spring racing campaign at Marton on Saturday of next week, the Manawatu Hunt Club will hold a meeting at the Awapuni course on Saturday. That the acceptances are of a satisfactory nature. considering all circumstances, will be granted by even the most captious critic, though it must be accounted unfortunate for the club that there were only two acceptors for the open sprint, the Stewards’ Handicap. Of most importance from the hunting point of view is the Manawatu Hunt Cup. for which seven stand their ground. As Trouble has been in the money on more occasions than any oi his opponents it is likely that he will be a warm favourite. Postman anJ Commentator are also weil placed to make a bold display, barring accidents. Certain to attract a good deal of interest is the Rangiotu Maiden Plate, which is run over five furlongs. There are a number of well-bred young horses in the field and their running will attract considerable attention. One interesting candidate is Ca •Hand’s halfbrother Dakar, by Nigger Minstrel, who is owned by Mr T. A. Duncan and trained by L. G. Morris. A a two-} earold last season Dakar raced only twice and displayed some promise in his second outing by finishing third to Hampden and Furlong at Wanganui. . He created a good impression, and, if he is forward in condition, he is likely to be well supported in his coming engagement Other interesting three-year-old candidates are Minstrel Lad. Bantoft, Bee Acre, and Battleground. Minstrel Lad is a half-brother, by Nigger Minstrel, to Arrow Lad, and he is regarded as promising, although he was unplaced in each of his three starts as a juvenile. Santoft, by Acre from Pleasure, re-
cently finished third to Tranquility and Aitua at Marton, but Battleground, by Acre from Martulla, by Martian, and Bee Acre, by Acre from Deborah, by Martian, have not yet shown any form in public. Schooling at Trentham. A most attractive piece of schooling was done yesterday morning by Trentham’s novice jumpers, Royal Game (A. Skipper) and Bright Song (A. Jenkins). Although they have not yet had a race over hurdles in public, they should both be capable of giving a good account of themselves in the Kiwitea Hack Hurdles at Awapuni on Saturday. in the first run over the three schooling fences, Royal Game gained an early lead, but Bright Song jumped faster than he did, and was about a length in front on landing over the last fenve. Both sprinted over the two furlongs’ stretch with full pace on, and there was no halting at the hurdles. They came at the last fence faster than anything has done in a school at Trentham for a long time, and they jumped it perfectly. In the second run they fenced fast and faultlessly. On this occasion Bright Song was taken to the inside, and she did not run out as she was inclined to do when on the outside. Royal Game went into his fences each time as straight as a die, and his only poor jump was at the second in the first run. Skipper will ride Royal Game on Saturdav, and Jenkins will be on
Bright Song. Jenkins’ other mounts include Winnagan in the Hunt Cup and Lacs d’Amour in the Maiden. S. Wilson will ride Black Mint, Flower, and Purse, and 6. Anderson will be on Solitaire IL and Maypay.
