Transport and the Depression A Question of Cause and Effect ALTHOUGH there may be differences or opinion as to the causes of the depression, there should be general agreement about one of the present troubles—the over-supply of transport facilities—an excess which costs the country some millions sterling a year. Wf.i'e the Railways, well-equipped and efficiently organised for satisfactory economical transport, have the latent capacity for a large increase of service, the Dominion is heavily burdened with competitive transport. It is clear that the Dominion’s full recovery from the present set-back necessitates elimination of waste in transport. The Railways can help New Zealand to regain prosperity.
