BADMINTON
NEXT WEEK’S TOURNAMENT NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS Preparations are going on apace in connection with the North Island badminton championship tournament, which is to be hold on August. 18, 19 and 20, Thursday, Friday and Saturday of next week. Entries have been received from many outside centres, including Wellington, Palmerston North, Levin and Marton. Judging by tho popularity tho game has enjoyed during the present season, the North Island championships should be a fitting finale to an excellent year. This is the first year the North Island championship has been held and Wanganui is to be congratulated on having been appointed the first centre to enjoy that privilege. {mst year a provincial tournament was held in Wanganui, with it going the provincial titles, but this coining tournament offers tho titles of North Island champions, a factor which tends to add even greater interest than ever. Among the names of outstanding players competing is noticed that of J. Bishworth, late of Auckland and now of Wellington. J. Rishworth was last year’s runner-up for the New Zealand badminton singles championship title, which event was won by G. Martin, of Auckland, after a long and hard-fought struggle. Mr Rishworth is also holder of the New Zealand doubles championship titles, both men’s and combined. Spectators are assured of a bill of fare par excellence at the tournament.
