THE QUEST FOR GOLD
DAMMING OF LAKES URGED WANAKA AND HAWEA OUTLETS CENTRAL OTAGO SUGGESTION DUNEDIN, Aug. 11. The success attending the present closing of the Kawarau dam has awakened general interest in the gold-bear-ing resources of the Kawarau and Molyneux Rivers. Public meetings have been held with a view to urging on the Government *he groat, gold production which woali follow the damming of Lake Wanika t>:id Lake Hawea. Well-attended meetings at Alexandra yesterday and Cromwell to-day unanimously passed the following reso’jtioa: —“That this meeting of business people believes that the pitting of weirs at the outlets of Lake Wanaka. and Hawea would moan uncovering an untold amount of gold in rhe bod of the Clutha River, and in the Clyde, Cromwell, Alexandra and Coal (.’reek Gorges, and immediately th® question of unemployment in O“igo; that it would assist materially in bringing back to normal tho deplstei finances of the country, and that s. large amount of valuable land, at present useless, lying between Cromvjll and Hawea. could bo brought under a system of irrigation. “Wo respectfully urge the Minister of Employment, through ♦he Public Works Department, thoroughly »u investigate tho position, with a view to proceeding at once with this -.ational undertaking. Further, we *xsk that during this investigation, no further mining privileges be granted within the area under discussion."
