ART EXHIBITION
WANGANUI SOCIETY EFFORT MAYOR PERFORMS OPENING. Although home might not agree with the style, there is a certain arresting frank brutality about a number of the hangings in the Wanganui Art Society exhibition now being hold in the Snrjeant Gallery. The exhibition is noteworthy for the representation of the modern style which is so striking that it. deserves more than a mere vursory glance. In introducing the Mayor, Mr N. G. Armstrong, who opened the exhibit iop yesterday, the president of the society, Mr L. Cohen, dwelt for awhile on the modern style of painting, lie drew a parallel with modern life, the age of machinery, the age of speed and the age of utility. That line of thought had entered the domains of art. ho said, and the result was seen in the works of present-day painters. Wanganui’s Serjeant Gallery was known throughout the Dominion and overseas, said Mr Armstrong. In no small measure the art society had contributed to bringing it to the high standard on which it was to-day. The society had taken great interest in the gallery, and a fine service had Been done to Wanganui in the efforts of the members. Mr Cohen, the president, was always ready to conduct visitors round the gallery, and in that was doing a service to the city. The society was also lucky in having as one of its enthusiastic members, Mr Hay Gampbell, who was an artist of experience, and whose practical knowledge must be of benefit to the work of the society.
