WOMAN CLERK’S THEFTS
“STOLE TO KEEP ANOTHER” CASE ADJOURNED FOR YEAR AUCKLAND, Aug. 1 A young woman clerk, aged 24, whoso name was ordered to be suppressed, pleaded guilty to two charges of stealing money from the firm which employed her, when sne appeared ba fore Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in th* Police Court on Saturday. The amounts involved wore £35 3s 3d and £3l Ils 4d. Detective-Sergeant T. Kelly said the fl rm concerned had wished t® with draw the charges, but that was not possible now that the police were in formed. Accused had readily admitted tho thefts, ami had covered up th* deficiency by placing “T.O.U.’s” from the accountant. The money had been spent. For eight years, Mr. Kelly added, the young woman had been a trusted employee, and she appeared to have been a very satisfactory worker. “This is not au ordinary case o r embezzlement,” commented the female probation officer, .Major A. Gordon “Tho girl stole to help another per son, and she did not spend the money on herself.’’ Tho magistrate remarked that th' breach of trust after a long period of good service was an extraordinary o< currence. in view of tho good record given accused he was prepared to adjourn the case for 12 months to give the young woman another opportunity. Restitution could be made in that time.
