GRAND THEATRE

‘ THE RULING VOICE” i “It’s warmer at the Grand now,” is 'the latest saying when Wanganui talks 'of theatres. Tho system is similar to that installed iu a largo chain of stores throughout the Dominion. The chilIdren’s community singing competition has brought upwards of 100 entries, th? judging of which will bo by popular [vote at next Saturday morning’s sing- ; song. The attendance at the Grand I Theatre afternoon matinees, when a cup of tea is served, shows that tho bringling to Wanganui of a practice known in barge cities is fully appreciated. Today and to-night will see the final screenings of “The Ruling Voice/’ Two of liliudom’s most ideally-east couples are seen together in. “The Ruling Voice.” Walter Huston ai« Doris Kenyon present tho more tensely dramatic portions of the story, aided by Loretta Young and David Manners, who also provide the romantic clement. Uf the milkman should fail to come ito your door you would go to the .'grocery of course, wouldn’t you? But “The Ruling Voice,” the First National picture, shows mothers of a great city on that day when the graft|crs who had cornered the milk supply, wore using machine guns on the carloads of milk that were coming into the city. This happened recently in one of our big cities. IXm’t fail to see this sensational expose. A great cast supports Huston, who plays the czar of the milk combine. BAND CONCERT. ) QUEEN ALEXANDRA’S OWN. I That the Queen Alexandra’s Own Band is capable of staging a first-class Sunday night concert was shown last Sunday in no uncertain manner. A wellfilled house thoroughly enjoyed the programme which had been carefully selected. The band, under Conductor Webb, was in fine form, and their hymn number <clearly showed the beautiful organ tone which they have developed. In “Patsy Flanigan’s Party,” a novelty number, they scored a decided win, which was shown by the rousing applause at the end of the item. The rest of the programme was taken up bv Gus Large and his Aces, and it can be truly said that a Wanganui audience has never listened to a better band of musicians, both individually and com- 1 bined. Mr Alan Sundborn, with his steel guitar, had to respond to a triple , encore, and his interpretation of “The I Rosary” was beautiful to listen to.

(saxophone), was one out of the box, - entitled “Saxafun,” and the name truly describes the piece. His recall - number “Valse Erica,” a more serious t composition, was beautifully played, s and brought ringing applause* from* the ’ audience. Mr Gus Large, at the piano, s showed what could be done with modf tern music, and his numbers. “Lies” -land “Maypole Leaf Rag,” were | greatly appreciated. The management ) . of the Queen Alexandra Band are for- ? tunate to have secured a return visit . 'from these talented artists.
