PATEA

RUGBY FOOTBALL I Heightened interest is being shown ! in the South Taranaki senior Rugby ! championships. On Saturday, Okaiawa were playing Opunake, and Patca at Eltham. Okaiawa and Patca aro still running neck and neck for the championship, Saturday’s matches making no difference to their equality in points. Play last Saturday in senior matches was continued, in spite of some rain in the Patca and Hawera areas, although further north, there was none. Juniors and thirds at Patca continued play although there was a heavy downpour at one part of the game. Results of senior matches were as follow: — Patca 32 v. Eltham 12. Okaiawa 19 v. Opunake 0. Kaponga 8 v. Athletic 3. Hawera 14 v. Waiinate 13. These results make the following addition to the championship ladder

The surprise of the day was the defeat of Patca thirds in the final for the third grade- championship by Hawera. Patea Seniors v. Eltham Patca played this game on their opponent’s grounds, and although it was raining when the team left home, the game was played through without any , rain falling.Fast, open work by both forwards and backs characterised the game, both sides throwing the ball about in good style. The forwards also joined conspicuously in the passing movements, making the game a spectacular and exciting one for the stand. The teams lined out as follows: — Patea: Richards, Crotty, Edwards, Paterson, Adams (2nd), Bourke, Gudgeon, Robinson, Couch, McTaggart, Wills, Bremer, Hamblyn, Baldwin and F. Crawford. Eltham: F. Marton, M. Prince, E. Hughes, R. Burke, J. Barker, R. Bocock, K. Kennedy, Campbell, Bocock, Gowe, Gernheifer, Phillips, Botts, White and Elliott. From this it will be noticed that Eltham were playing the 3-2-3 scrum formation, while Patea played their successful 3-3-2, with a loose-header. J. Crawford and Petersen were missed from the team, which was not the strong team that was fielded the previous week. For- Eltham. Kennedy, Burke, Hughes and R. Bocock wefc the best of their backs.* Bocock and Hughes doing very effective work in breaking through. Of the light, fast pack, White, Bocock and Campbell showed to advantage. For Patea, Richards played a good, sound game as full-back, Gudgeon was as elusive as ever as half-back, Bourke and Edwards played ono of their best games this season, Edwards shining out. In the forwards, Robinson, Wills, Couch and Bremer -played solid games. Adams was a junior player in his first senior game this season, and played a good game for Patea. Patea won the toss, and played with the wind behind them. Play was up and down field, and Eltham were penalised after a few minutes’ play, and Bourke opened the score for Patea. — Patea 3, Eltham ff.

Eltham rushed play down to Patea’s line, and Bourke ran into a handy position and potted a pretty goal, making the scores—Eltham 4, Patea 3. Then from a back movement, the ball went out to Adams, who scored wide out, Bourke failing with his kick. —Patea 6, Eltham 4.

Both team were treating tators to some lively exchanges, and from a scrum, in midfield, Gudgeon sent the ball along his line of backs to Edwards, who scored in a handy position for Bourke to add another two points to the score. Just before half-time, R. Bocock got possession and ran through the opposing backs and scored a very nice try, Hughes making no mistake with the kick, so that the score at half-time was: Patca 11, Eltham 9. Changing over, Patea soon had the upper hand and play was carried down by the Patea forwards, Wills, Couch and Robinson in the van. From a set scrum, Patea hooked, Gudgeon transferred to Bourke, to Adams, to Edwards, who inpassed to Adams, who scored his second try, Bourke converting.— Patea 16, Eltham 9. Patea backs were now handling the ball in good style, and Edwards sent Crotty a nice pass for him to race over, but he lost possession, Eltham were attacking strongly, but the Patea defence proved too good for them, and Richards found the line well down. From the thrown-in, Wills got possession and forced his way through to score, Edwards just missing with his kick.— Patea 19, Eltham 9. Play centred for some minutes, and Robinson passed to Bourke, who transferred to Adams, to Edwards, to Paterson, who reversed infield to Edwards, who finished up the movement with a try. Bourke again converting.— Patea 24. Eltham 9. Patca were now making the pace very fast. Gudgeon, picking up, sent the ball to Edwards, who passed to Paterson, the latter passing infield to Edwards, who outpaced his opponents, and scored beneath the posts, Bourke adding the points. —Patea 29, Eltham 9. From a Patea back movement, Bo cock intercepted and raced out to Richards, the full-back, and when collared, passed to Hughes, who ran over unopposed, but he failed to convert his own try.— Patea 29. Eltham 12. The last few minutes saw Patea again attacking, and from a scrum in side Eltham’s twenty-five, Gudgeon sent to Edwards, to Crotty, for the, latter to score wide out, P Bourke failing with the kick, making the final score— Patea 32 Eltham 12 Mr L. Claphain refereed. Thirds Defeated. There were many disappointed faces among the spectators of the match between Patea and Hawera thirds at Patea on Saturday. This match was the final for the thirds championship of South Taranaki, both Hawera and

Patea having six victories to their credit.

The game was very willing, Hawera proving victorious by a penalty goal. The Patca boys territorially had the best of the game, it seemingly to be their game in the second spell. Early in the first half T. Hurley narrowly missed making three points for Patea by a penalty kick, tho ball only just missing the uprights. Tho Hawera team were on the defence for the most part, playing against the wind, and only good defensive play on their part prevented Patea from scoring.

In the second spell, although Hawera played with the wind behind them the Patca boys had them defending most of the spell. Rangi failed by inches only from scoring. The only points camo from a penalty awarded to Hawera for a Patca boy getting offside in a handy position, which enabled Londrum to turn this chance to points which won the game and tho champion ship. Mr. J. Kiley refereed the game. LADIES’ GOLF The following is the draw for the L.G.U. Medal round, to be played on Wednesday next, August 3. In conjunction with this match will be played the second round for the eclectic competition for the trophy donated by Mrs Crompton. RIFLE SHOOTING Eight members of the Patca Rifle Club journeyed to Kaponga last Saturday, to carry out a challenge to Kaponga for the Taranaki Challenge Shield. Rainy, cold weather made the afternoon very unpleasant, and conditions for shooting were not of the best. Kaponga withstood the challenge by 20 points, but Patea shots put up good scores. Following are the scores of the teams, over ranges of 300, 500 and 600 yards:— Patea.—D. Roots 99, S. Macdonald 93, T. Brunton 91, L. Davidson 91, A. Campbell 90, C. Carev 89, J. Cunningham 88, E. The Opaku Hall was packed to its doors last Friday evening, when a farewell social was given to Mr and Mrs George Afillcr and family, prior to their leaving £or Foilfling. Dancing and musical items passed the evening away very happily, but a sadder note was struck when, flu ring the supper interval, opportunity was taken to bid Mr and Mrs Miller an 1 their daughters all happiness and prosperity in their future life. Mr J. Sheahan made tho presentation of a travelling rug to Mr and Mrs Miller, and a tea cup, saucer and plate to Miss Miller. Several of their neighbours and settlers of the district spoke of the regret felt by all nt the departure of Air and Airs Miller from Opaku after a residence there of over twelve years.
