MANGAWEKA

RIFLE CLUB BALL SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION Some two hundred odd people were present, at; the Mangaweka Defence Rifle Club ball, which was held in tho Oddfellows’ Hall, Mangaweka, on Friday evening. Visitors from all parts of the district attended, while many were present from other parts, including Wanganui and Palmerston North. A feature of the ball, and one which produced much favourable comment, was the very tine decorations. Tho committee had devoted much time and labour to the scheme, and the effect was certainly striking. Among tho myriad coloured streamers hanging from the ceiling, lights of blue, green and red glowed softly, making quite a fairyland-like effect. The walls wero tastefully decorated with ferns and other greenery relieved at intervals with largo mirrors. M.D.R.C. (Mangaweka Defence Rifle Club) shone out in largo colours at the end of the hall. The stage was turned into a charming setting with fdrns and subdued lights. During the evening the president of the club, Mr H. Johnston, presented the various trophies won during the year. In thanking those present for their support, he wished everyone a pleasant and enjoyable evening. On behalf of the Rifle Club he wished to convey special thanks to the ladies and other members who had worked to make the ball a success. A very successful year had been passed through by the club and a high standard of shooting had been maintained.

Trophies were then presented as follows: Championship Belt, Mr F. P. Dickinson. This trophy had been won by Mr Dickinson last year, and the president congratulated the winner on his splended performance. The Handicap Aggregate Cup (presented by Mr W. Watson) was won by Mr H. Bailey; President’s Challenge Cup, Mr Allen Watkins. Ladies Championship Aggregate Trophy, Mrs L. Mahoney; trophy for ladies' shoot held on June 3, Miss Joan Bailey; second prize for tho Championship Aggregate (miniature Cup), Mr A. H. Dickinson; second prize for the President’s Challenge Cup (miniature cup), Mr W. Hamilton; second prize for the Handicap Aggregate Cup (miniature cup), Mr V. A. Bland; second prize Handicap Cup, presented by Miss J. Freeman, Mr F. P. Dickinson; second prize for ladies (trophy), Miss D. Hamilton; third prize for ladies (trophy), Airs H. Nash; second prize for ladies’ shoot on June 3, Mrs Oulsnam; third prize for ladies’ shoot (trophies), Airs F. Heise, and Aliss Good (tie). After the presentation an excellent supper was provided, and during the interlude extras were played by Mr G. Phynn, Air Roy Blake and Air H. Hawkins. On the orchestra resuming, party caps were distributed and this added much to the revelry. First-class music was provided by the “Tui” orchestra, while Mr 8. Dickinson, Mr P. Riley and Mr C. RUGBY FOOTBALL Mangaweka juniors were defeated by Pirates at, Taihape on Saturday by 6 points to nil, after a very fast and interesting game. Utiku added another victory to their list, and this gives them a substantial lead in the running for the junior cup.
