FIRE TRAGEDY
CHARRED BODY FOUND BLAZE AT AWAPUNI PALMERSTON N., June 27An old wooden annexe of the main buildings at the Old People’s Home at Awapuni was totally destroyed by (ire early thi.M morning. This has brought the total of fires in unoccupied premises in and near Palmerston North to no fewer than live within a fortnight, and the police are investigating them. The superintendent of the Fire Bri gado stated that all the fires in unoccupied premises are considered to be suspicious in character. The annexe at the home was owned by the Hospital Board, and has been unoccupied since the end of April. A surprising sequel lo the lire was the gruesome discovery after daylight of the charred remains of a man in the still smoking ruins. The victim has not been identified. He is thought to be a stranger who sought shelter from a heavy storm overnight.
