COMET GEDDES

AN INTERESTING VISITOR [ Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON. June 27. Considerable interest has been aroused iu astronomical circles by the new comet discovered last week by Mr. Geddes, a well-known observer, at Otekura, Otago. At the time of dineovery its magnitude was given as 10, but since then it has decreased numerically, indicating that the comet is becoming brighter, although it is still invisible to the unaided eye. It is at the present time outside the earth’s orbit and a considerable distance from the sun. It is possible, therefore, that as it approaches the sun in the near future it may brighten into an object that can plainly be seen in the sky. The name Comet Geddes has already been attached to it, as it appears that Mr. Geddes was the first observer to notice it. During the last few days the comet has been observed by Mr. G. V Hudson, of Karori. His positions for the comet were announced this afternoon by tho Dominion Astronomer, Dr. Adams. They wore as follow: June 24 at 8 hr. Greenwich mean time, right ascension 10 hr. 24 min., south declination 82 deg 52 min. of arc magnitude 9; Juno 26 at 6 hr. 15 min. GMT, right ascension 10 hr. 49 min., south declination 81 deg. 24min. of arc magnitude 8. The times are given in Greenwich mean time and correspond to 7.30 p.m. and 5.45 p.m. New Zealand standard time.
