“HANDS OFF”
DEVELOPMENTS IN ASIA JAPAN WARNS AMERICA (San Francisco Press Broadcast) WASHINGTON, June 26. The editorial by William Randolph Hearst, commenting on grave affronts to the United States aud her ambassador to Tokio by a high Japanese official, created a profound sensation in official and diplomatic circles here today. following close on Japan’s attitude towards a reduction in armaments as expressed at the Geneva Conference, it was cited as conclusive proof that Japan is in a wide-awake frame of mind and that President Hoover’s hopes for a reduction of one-third in world armaments have gone glimmering. Officials declined to make any report for comment until they have received an official report of the incident from Ambasador Joseph C. Grew.
At a dinner in his honour Viscount Kiscujiro Ishii, former Ambassador to Washington and now high in the Japanese Privy Council, warned the United States to keep “her hands off” in Asia, or there would be trouble.
