WAVERLEY

RUGBY FOOTBALL. In spite of stormy weather condition the final matches in the first round ol Ihe Wairoa Sub union inter-club com petition were played Inst Saturday. All grounds were in a state of pools ol water and mud, which together with the greasy state of the ball, made back plav impossible. Thus forwards had play all their way in the majority of games. There weije several surprises in th< three matches, one being rhe defeat by Public Works of Ranuitatau, thus re versing theti positions on tho chain pionship ladder. Public Works’ win. however, was a pop liar one. In tho Waitotara Ngamatapouri rnat(d), in the kick following Waitotara’s only try of the day, the ball struck the goalpost, and it was very difficult to say whether the ball went over or not. There was a protest lodged following the match. Results of the three matches were as follows: Waverley 9, v. Kai Iwi 0. P.W.D. 6, v. Rangitatau 3. Ngamatapouri 5, v. Waitotara 3.

Waverley 9, v. Kai Iwi 0. In common with football grounds on the whole of the West Coast, the Waverley Oval {proved very slippery to players in the match between Waverley and Kai Iwi. Besides this, the greasy state of the ball spoiled many promising back movements. Several attempts at place-kicking proved futile with the ball as it was, while even handling it at times proved difficult One of Waverley’s tries was spec lacular for the day’s standard of play Play was close to Kai Iwi’s twenty five, when Cunningham picked up and. beating the opposing backs, crossed the line to score well out. The second try was made by South combe who, from a forward rush, kicked through to follow up fast, and breaking through the defence, *to score. Carey made the third and last try for Waverley. A Kai Iwi back was tackled in possession and when he dropped the ball Carey snapped up to cross the line. Mr. J. Verry refereed the game. Seven-a-side Tournament. Next Saturday, between the first and second round matches, the subunion will hold a seven-a-side tournament at Waverley for clubs iu tho union. This tournament will be preceded in tho morning by a school tournament, in which teams have been entered by schools from Westmere to Kohi. All six clubs in the union have entered teams for the afternoon tournament, and some of the clubs have nominated more than one team. Members of all teams are asked to be on tbe ground sharp at 1.30 p.m. Waverley teams will be °as follows: A Team. —Huff, McClcnaghan, Carey; Fitzgibbon; Hartley, Southcpmbe and Neale. B Team. —Ford; Oliver, Cunningham; Hammond. Hair, McDougall and Quayle. Emergencies: Spencei and Valintine. EGMONT-WANGANUI HUNT. MEET AT “GOWAN LEA.” Weather conditions last Saturday tested the keenness of members of the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club, and showed the great degree of enthusiasm thta is keeping tho club going during the present season, which is one of the hardest financially that the club has experienced. About forty follow ers braved the rain and wind, and although it was not one of the best of meets, the afternoon proved ejcitjng for both followers and onlookers. Two hares were sighted during the after noon, but no kill was made, owing t,r the gullies giving adequqate shelter to “pussy.” Hounds went well, and gave the field two good runs. Jumping was* somewhat difficult owing to the soft and slippery state of the ground, the take-offs getting very cut-up after the first two or three horses. One or two nasty spills occurred during the after noon, but none of the riders were seri ously affected. Jumps were mostly over four-wire and sparred fences, and several gorse hedges wtih ditches. When the pack was called in shortly after four o’clock, Dr. Simmons (mas ter), on behalf of the club, thanked Messrs.
