BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ CLUBS

WANGANUI DISTRICT THE JUDGING COMPLETE Judging has been completed in the Bovs’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs competitions in the Wanganui district. Charts have yet to bo marked. Centralisation of crops has made a wonderful improvement, Mr. J. B. Hogg, chief agricultural Instructor, told the “Chronicle” yesterday. The crops, generally, were satisfactory, he added. Mangolds were affected by the season. Early sown crops -were better. Carrots were good, but swedes suffered a lot from aphis and dry rot. Owing to the small farm plan occupying the attention of officers of the Department of Agriculture, it has been impossible to obtain their services in connection with the judging this year. Mr. Hogg has carried this work out himself. At various schools ho spoke to the children and parents on the danger of the cabbage white butterfly. This pest would become a serious menace if allowed the slightest liberty, he said. So far as records are concerned, it is thought that the crop of Matchless White carrots grown by a Waverloy Convent pupil wiU go very close to honours. It averaged out at 99 tons, something phenomenal. Judging at two schools as under completes the list. There is to be a meeting of the executive at an early Jate when a report on the year will bo received and the promotion of calf clubs 'will be considered. Upokongaro Mangolds
