Almost simultaneously advice was received of the prospect of the West Coast miners resuming work on Monday. The Kaimiro has been diverted to Greymouth to load coal, and sails io night. BASIS FOR SETTLEMENT STATEMENT TOR THE OWNERS [Per Press Association.! AUCKLAND, June 17. The basis upon which preliminary action can be taken for a settlement of the coal miners’ strike, is indicated in a statement by Mr. W. D. Holgate, president of the New Zealand Coal Mine Owners’ Association. This is that the owners are prepared to adopt the suggestion of the miners that the men on strike resume work on Monday next • under the old terms, providing it is clearly understood that district conferences are to be held to consider the negotiation or district agreements, and that the right to engage and discharge * men at discretion is conceded the owners. A national conference for the purpose of arriving at an all-Dominion agreement will not be considered.
