MANAWATU COUNTY ENGINEER’S ANNUAL REPORT The county engineer, in his annua, report, said that with the exception of completing the paving on the Fox ton-Himatangi section, all construction work was at a standstill, it was hoped that the Himatangi-Kangiotu section would have been paved during the year, but the subsidy was not available Several useful works had oeen undertaken uuder the No. *5 scheme. 4 ‘ Awahuri-Feilding Highway.—This road was troubled with flooding at one period, but only surface damage was done. The road fence has beeu set back at the Chinaman’s corner L'he usual surface metal has been spread when necessary and grading continued. The four bridges have been repaired and some\ re-decked Drainage improvements have been made and the road has been closed in to the required width of 20 feet for some distance by the building of earth shoulders.

‘ 4 Sanson-Awahuri Highway. —This road is standing quite satisfactorily, patching having been done where necessary. A white fence has been erected at the summit of Mt. Stewart. The surface of the eastern side of the hill is rather rough, but can be main tained until funds are available for the finishing work to be done. Stone drains have been constructed in the shoulders of the hot mix stretch, ami an efficient drainage system is in oper ation throughout the whole seven miles.

4 * Sanson-Bulls Section. —This lengt h is standing well. The two small timber bridges should be replaced in con crete, but every endeavour will be made to maintain them for another

year. ‘ ‘ Himataugi-Sanson Section. —This section of 13 J miles has cost a large sum for maintenance. Foui and ahalf miles of the northern end has been shouldered and drained ready for re-metalling. Three new concrete pipe culverts have been laid and the usual maintenance carried out.

4 4 Foxton-Himatangi Section. —The paving of this length was completed during the year, and is now in first class order and has an exceptionally good running surface. With the exception of raking into the bitumcv and drainage this road should not cost much for maintenance. The twenty chains of boundary road between Foxton borough and the county was constructed during the year in readiness for paving, but nothing has yet been done to complete the job. 4 ’ Whirokino Section—This length gave a deal of trouble during the wet season. No great volume of water came over the road, but it remained just above water level for some considerable period. The traffic soon went through the metal crust into the peat swamp beneath, necessitating extensive repairs. It is expected that the new and extra flood gates constructed at the mouth of the Government drain will have a beneficial effect on this road. The bridge over the Government drain has been repaired. The Whirokino Bridge was tightened up and the decking repaired. 4 4 Himatangi-Rangiotu Section. —The maintenance of this road has been very heavy, even though it was kept down to the minimum. The road surface continues to corrugate and is badly in want of bituminising.

4 4 Foxton-Shannon Section.—This road has been maintained as usual by grading and metalling. The Shannon Bridge was thoroughly tightened up and bolt ends painted. A large amount of timber and debris was removed from the piers during the flood period. “Foxton Beach Section.—The usual maintenance by way of metalling, grading and draining has been con tinned.

The time is drawing near when this bridge will have to be replaced. 4 4 Tangimoana Section.—A new concrete culvert was constructed on this road and others were lengthened and repaired. A small cutting was widened and fascined. The usual maintenance was carried out.

44 Stewart’s Line Section. —An efficient drainage system now operates on this road. One new concrete culvert was laid and repairs made to the bridge. The road was graded and metalled as usual. Generally speaking all main highways have been maintained in a fair condition, but no great improvement can be made without a much greater expenditure. Ridings “Sanaon.—Drainage has been undertaken on Wilson’s, Fagan’s and Cemetery Roads. Five new concrete culverts have been laid in this riding. The entrance to Ohakea Terrace at Bulls Bridge has been widened. Several small bridges have been repaired and the usual grading and maintenance has been carried one on all roads. Several roads will benefit when the Makowhai drainage scheme is in operation. “Mt. All other roads and bridges have been maintained with the exception of Boncss’ Road, which has been closed for traffic. “Waitobi.—The Taipo-Awahuri Road has been drained and shoulders buiP on each side of the metal, thus mak ing a saving in grading. A small amount of drainage has been done and a new culvert laid on Penny’s Line. Similar work has been carried out on Rowe’s and Taipo Roads. Small bridges have been repaired and a drain cut on Hammond’s Line and two culverts laid to relieve the surface water at the junction with Taipo Road.

safer in all ways. A small bridge has been re-built and widened on Tompkins’ Line and a sand cutting widened and fascined. Cocrete pipe cul-

verts have been laid on Green and Banks-Waitohi Roads. The usual grad ing and maintenance has been done. “Carnarvon.—A little draining has bee done on Koputaru, Shailers’ and Lake Roads. The cost of this was refunded by Government subsidy- Two new culverts were laid on Couper’s Line and one each on Bainessc and Manga whata Roads. All roads have been graded and maintained. “ Awahou. —Several chains of road formation has been carried out on Wilson’s Road off the Foxton Beach Road. Approximately the mile of new

road formation was undertaken on No 6 Line together with the necessary drain-ng. Drainage was attended to on Poplar Road. Mile Drain am! The four graders and one trailer grader have been in constant use during the year. I would point nut that some of the tractors attached to the graders have been in 3ommi?s. : c n for some years and although they are maintained as well as possible, the time is not far distant when new power units will have to be procured. “Tramway-—The track has been maintained in a fair condition and a number of sleepers require renewing.
