The Dail read a second time the Finance Bill by 68 votes to 58. Mr. McEntee, Minister of Finance said that, extra taxation would be avoided if the Dail united together to secure a remission of the payments to Britain by withholding £l,loo,(Jo‘i in respect of Irish constabulary pen sions, £600,000 in respect of local loans, in addition to £3,000,000 in con nection with land annuities. He added that he believed the Free State would secure these remissions if the Opposi tion would back the Government up. Political circles believe that Mr. de Valera’s note to Mr. Thomas, de spatched to-night, detailed the Free State’s reasons for withholding the land annuities.
