DEAD IN COTTAGE

RETIRED NAVAL OFFICER. [ Per Press Association.] WHANGAREI, June 15. Michael Hayes, about 63, a retired petty officer of the Navy, was found dead in a cottage at Kaitaia, where he was a well-known figure, with his throat cut. The wound is believed to have been self-inflicted. There was evidence that the man also struck himself on the head with a hammer and stabbed his chest with a slasher. The cottage door was securely locked. Hayes had independent means. A number of medals, including a D.C.M., was found in the house.
