Cundell and Son of Mint by D. Pennant. ON ELLERSLIE TRACKS CROUHIER AND MANAWHENUA. SMART GALLOP RECORDED As a result of immediate attention and a few days of fine weather the course and tracks at Ellerslie have recovered wonderfully well from the cutting-up they received during the Great Northern meeting. On Tuesday, when the weather was fine for training operations the going on the No. 3 grass was fairly good and the feature of the work was a fast half-mile by Croupier and Manawhenua. Croupier (Ludlow) and Manawhenua (light boy) were associated in a smartly-run half-mile in 50s. Croupier was on the outsid« and covered a lot of ground to have a slight advantage at the finish. It was a smart effort under the conditions and both horses worked well. Croupier, who will be in fine racing trim after a few more sharp gallops, and Manawhenua are two of the best-conditioned horses at Ellerslie.

ELLERSLIE CLASSICS DECREASE IN ENTRIES. “SIGN OP THE TIMES.” Entries for future classic races of the Auckland Racing Club are substantially smaller than last year, the total being 969, compared with 1284, a decrease of 315. 4 The decrease is a sign of the times, showing the desire of owners to Economise, but apart from the aspect of loss of revenue in entry fees, it may not necessarily be a bad thing, comments the New Zealand Herald. In the past it has been the custom for an owner to nominate his yearlings for all future races without Many of the entries turn out disappointing and do not survive even the first forfeit, and the lists are always heavily pruned before the day of the race. It is evident that owners are now making a careful selection not only of the yearlings suitable for nomination, also of the races for which to nominate them. The same thing will apply ae before, namely, that a percentage will not come up to the required standard, but there is every hope that in the long run neither the size of the fields nor the quality of the contestants will be effected. The success of the recent Auckland Winter meeting was a happy reminder that things are not as bad in racing as they are sometimes thought to be, and there is every hope for a bright future, including the classic events, which are such a strong feature of Ellerslie spring, summer and autumn programmes. Details of the entries are as follows-

FALL AT ELLERSLIE H. DULIEU RECOVERING. AUCKLAND, June 14. Good progress toward recovery from the head injuries he received when Advance Camp fell in the Great Northern Hurdles is being made by H. Dulieu and it is expected that he will be able to leave the Auckland Hospital to-day. However, he is not yet completely recovered and he will probably be confined to bed for n few more weeks before he is well enough to get about again. Tilson 10. ABERFELDY IN FORM OFF THE SCHOOLING LIST Aberfeldy is reported to be striding along well in his work and it is stated that he has not lost any of the dash which characterised hi« form in previous years. After last year’s Grand National meeting he was placed on the school ing list at the instigation of the chief stipendiary steward, but a short while back he was given a course of barrier practice at Ricearton in the* presence of Mr. G. E. Curry, stipendiary steward, and the gelding gave such satisfactory displays that his removal from the list was recommended and his clearance has since been officially notified. This will allow Aberfeldy to contest flat events, and has prompted his owner-trainer to keep him in com mission, as otherwise, with his oppor tunities restricted to hurdle racing. he would probably have been retired. During R. W King’s absence in Australia Silver Ring and Grecian Prince, the other inmates or the stable, will bp in charge of his licensed son, J. King, who has had under his control since being handled last season the two-year-old Grampian, by Robespierre from Watermini, h\ Groyspnar from Waterspraj,
