PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
CONSTITUTION ADOPTED A meeting was held in St. Paul’s Hall on Tuesday evening to adopt a constitution for the Wanganui Presbyterian Church Officers’ Association, which has for its object the consideration of matters affecting the church generally and public, social and ethical questions. The meeting was well attended, every church of the denomination in Wanganui being represented. Officers elected for the ensuing year were: Mr W. Bruce, president; Mr G. Scott, vice-president; Mr McLean, sec-retary-treasurer. The action of the Provincial Farmers’ Union in deciding to open meetings with prayer was commended by the president and a resolu’. on expressing appreciation was carried. 1 ‘That this association place on record its appreciation of the action of those ministers of the church who voluntarily offered to accept a reduced salary in order to assist their congregations to meet financial obligations during the present economic stress” was moved and carried, the mover stating that it was not generally known that many of the clergy had voluntarily accepted a reduced salary or were paying back a percentage to the sustenation funds, and it was to be hoped that where congregations were weak financially those ministers who had not already done so would follow the example of those who had, and share in the general sacrifice. Mr J. Aitken gave an interesting resume of his experiences in connection with the church in Scotland on his recent visit. He consented to give a paper at the next meetiqg, on “Why are we Presbyterians?” when Bibleclass members will be invited to attend.
