THE WANGANUI DISTRICT MONTHLY MEETING HELD The monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board was held yesterday, Mr. E. F. Hemingway (Patea.i presiding. There werp present also Messrs. J. S. Tingey (Fcilding). K. Dukeson (Hunterville), J. K. Horublow (Foxton), J. Aitken (Wanganui), Al. H. Oram (Palmerston N.), and A. S. Coleman (±Marton). In reference to proposed improvements to brick buildings at Eoxtou and West End, the department instructed that the work should be postponed. The buildings compared favourably with many others used for commercial purposes and were considered reasonably safe from earthquake in the meantime. It was decided to agree to a request for the installation of a hotwater service in the teacher’s residence, Karioi, on account of the cold climate.
As the result of reports from the architect it was decided to renew tank stands at Ohakune, instal safeguards against damage to pipe lines by frost at Raetihi and to repair damage done by frost to pipes at Kangataua. Permission was granted the Waituna West Committee to line the school porch. The board authorised the provision of further cupboard accommodation at the teacher’s residence, Waitotara.
A request from Marton Junction committee for a porch to be erected over the western door was referred to the architect for report. The school was suffering through the prevailing weather, Mr. Coleman stated, the boards inside being inclined to rot. He thought the work should be done, but was of opinion that the architect’s report should be obtained. A request is to be submitted to the department for a grant to fence the new school site at Makino. It was reported that the committee, pending erection of the new building, work which had been deferred, desired to plant the area.
The architect reported that while he agreed that concrete or asphalt paths would be desirable at the school residence at Rata, was of opinion that the position could be met adequately by a supply of metal. He had accordingly ordered li yards. This report was approved.
With regard to the paths at the school residence, Maxwell, the architect reported that their condition was not bad. He had interviewed the chairman of the committee and had been informed that a supply of metal was being arranged. The report was adopted. A grant was approved to supply timber to Waverley for a culvert. The board approved of temporary partitions being erected in an unoccupied classroom at Queen’s Park School for the establishment of a Wanganui dental clinic.
Application for the establishment of a school at Tawata Block, Wanganui River, was reported on, the secretary advising that, after conference with the Taranaki board, it had been agreed that the best site was on. the Wanganui board’s side of the riverThe Taranaki board was prepared to allow the use of an unoccupied building which would have to be conveyed to the opposite bank. It was decided to approach the department and ask for a grant to carry out this work.
