SERVICE CAR TERMINAL

WHERE IN WANGANUI? MANY OPINIONS After full discussion, the executive of the Wanganui Automobile Association last night appointed a committee to meet the Retailers' Association and the City Council with regard to the fixing of terminal points for motor services running via Wanganui. The committee was given power to act. Mr. F. J. Hill said that the council desired the opinion of the Automobile Association. The matter was also being put before the Retailers’ Association for their opinion. At the present time three services had cither a terminal or a central depot in Victoria Avenue. Ono car remained in the Avenue as a depot where people could leave parcels which thev might be taking away. It had been suggested that the cars might, park in Maria Place or in St. Hill Street. Another suggestion was that a terminn 1 should be at the buck of tho new Museum. in front of tho Drill H n ]l. Mr. E. M. Silk asked if when the word “terminal” was nsod, it implied that the cars eonld atop there as long nj> the drivers desired. Hill said that they could stay there a long time. Mr. D. McFarlane said that it would be a very groat inconvenience if the services did not have some central depot whore people could send parcels. Mr. Hill pointed out that if the services had a terminal point the cars could stay there from tho time they came until the time they went out of the city again. Mr. S. G. Whittali thought that the cars could stay in Victoria Avenue for the recognised time limit, even if they had a terminal point set apart Mr. A. 8. Burgess favoured the establishing of the terminal beside the museum, and Mr. Silk beside the Ladies’ Rest in St. Hill Street. Mr. Hill: Should they be in the Avenue? Several voices: No. Dr. Robertson explained the system of a central terminal for all services, as he had seen it operated in the United States and elsewhere. Mi. Whittail thought that a common terminal for the whole of the str vices would be a good scheme. The meeting then decided that a committee should be appointed to confer with the Retailers’ Association and the City Council, it being thought that the service car proprietors concerned would bo invited to also at lend any conference on the subject.
