UNDER ONE HEAD

DEPARTMENTS UNITE LABOUR AND UNEMPLOYMENT MR. GODFREY TO CONTROL [ Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, June 14. Consequent ou the retirement of Mr. W. Newton from the position of Secretary of Labour, opportunity is being taken to give effect to the decision of the Government to amalgamate the Labour and Unemployment Departments. Mr. G. C. Godfrey, Commissioner of Unemployment, has assumed the duties of permanent head of the combined departments. The effect of t ß ie amalgamation will be to place the control and management of all matters appertaining to Labour and Unemplopment under one head. The existing organisation of the Labour Department will now be more directly available for employment problems throughout the Dominion.

OTTAWA GATHERING IF MR. COATES GOES APPOINTING A LOCUM TENENS CHRISTCHURCH, Juno 13. Should the Minister of Employment, the Right Hon. J. G. Coates, decide to go to the Ottawa Conference after all as one of tho New Zealand Ministerial delegates, his portfolio of Employment, which is regarded as probably the most important in the Cabinet to-day, will probably be taken over by the Minister of Labour (the Hon. A. Hamilton). That information was given to a reporter to-day by the Prime Minister (the Right Hon. G. W. Forbes). Mr. Forbes said that no word on the subject of his going had yet been received from Mr. Coates, who was taking every aspect of the question into consideration. The change nf the portfolio to Mr. Hamilton would be convenient to the Government, as the Employment and Labour Departments were now controlled by one head.
