OBITUARY

LADY STRINGER DEATH AFTER SHORT ILLNESS WELFARE WORK ACTIVITIES After a abort illness Lady Stringer, wife of Sir Walter Stringer, died at her residence in Hall’s Avenue, Rein-j uera, on Sunday, at the ago of 70 years. The 50th anniversary of the wedding of Sir Walter and Lady Stringer occurred on June 1. Lady Stringer, who was Miss Ada Davies, daughter of Mrs. F. A. Davies, of Dunedin, was born in Dunedin, where she received her education and spent her early life. In 1882 she was married to Sir Walter Stringer, who was then partner in the firm of Duncan, Cottrill and Stringer, of Christchurch. They lived in Christchurch, where her husband was appointed Crown Prosecutor in 1893. In 1914 Sir Walter was appointed Judge oi the Arbitration Court and for a number of years Lady Stringer travelled through tho Dominion with him. In 1921 Sir Walter went to Auckland as senior resident Judge, having been elevated to tho Supreme Court Bench, and he and Lady Stringer took up their residence here. Lady Stringer had lived in Auckland ever sinceShortly after Sir Walter’s retirement from the Bench in 1027 be was knighted. During the years that she spent m Christchurch and Auckland Lady Stringer made many friends. She was interested in a number of charitable organisations, particularly those deal* ing with the welfare of children, and her generosity in answering any call for assistance was notable. Lady Stringer took an interest in the work of the Victoria League, while she was associated with the Navy League during her residence in Christchurch. Lady Stringer is survived by he? husband and three sons, Mr. Cyril Stringer, of Christchurch, Dr. Bruce Stringer, of Christchurch, and Mr. Trevor Stringer, of Matamata. There are several grandchildren.
