RIGID CONTROL

HIGHWAY FINANCES THE BOARD’S DICTUM. LOCAL BODIES WARNED. WELLINGTON, June 10. “The board’s finances this year have been so severely curtailed by Parliament that the most rigid control must be exercised, and if expenditure is undertaken without the board’s authority local bodies must not expect assistance from the Main Highways funds,” stated a circular letter received from the Alain Highways Board at to-day’s meeting of the Makara County Council. It was anticipated, stated the letter, that the economic situation would be reflected in a reduction in traffic on the highways this year, with a corresponding reduction in maintenance costs, but without a reduction in the standard of maintenance.
