CHEQUE FOR POPE
DONATED BY AMERICANS VATICAN CITY, April 9. A check for 1,100,000 dollars, representing contributions of American Catholics, was presented to Pope Pius XI. this morning by Mgr. William Quinn of New York, director of the Organisation for the Propagation of the Faith. The money, which will be used in the development of missions, is 20 per cent, less than last year’s contribution, but the Pontiff said he was grate ful for the sum and congratulated Mgr. Quinn on the spiritual progress of the organisation. The general council of the society reported total world contributions ol 2,600,000 dollars, including the American cheque, which represented 42 per cent of the world’s donations to Catho lie missions. The total was 28 per cent, lower :han last year, hut several countries itill to be heard from probably will •educe that margin to about 15 pe» sent., the Pontiff was informed. Mgr. Flynn said he was well satisfied with the American contribution, since he had expected a 30 per cent, decline. Cardinal Van Rossum, Prefect ot the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, expressed regret that the total had fallen below normal. “Considering the conditions.” the Pontiff replied, “what you have done is marvellous. Wherever we turn we see a vast horizon filled with difficul ties which you are obliged to confront at every step of your work. Your accomplishment deserves the admiration of the angels.”
