WANGANUI MATCHES SATURDAY’S GAMES ASSOCIATION CUP. The. first ganTGs In the Wanganui Association Cup competition were 0 played on Saturday. The weather, 0 though not too promising in tho moniJ ing, cleared up and an ideal afternoon 0 followed. o The result of the games places Thistle in the lead. Eastbrookc and Woollen 0 .Mills finished all square, while Thistle o overcame Athletic by the odd goal in 2 nine. o ' 0 Eastbrooko and Woollen Mills. o o These teams lined up on No. 1 J? ground, both sides .showing changes. 0 The teams were as follow: o Eastbrookc. —Scott, Cotton, Woods. Killeen, Jones, Upton, Stokes, Riley, 0 Maxey, Wilson, Quinn. o Woollen Mills.—Chestnut t, Taster, 0 Proudfoot. Mair, Kerwin, D. Mclnnis, o Morgan, Bates. Ritchie, W. Mclnnis, 0 Duke 0 The referee was Mr S Stewart n The game had a lively opening. The o Mills, getting possession, saw a nice 0 movement started by Ritchie, to W. n Mclnnis, to Duke, whose parting shot n was charged down for a corner. Duke, 0 taking the kick. had tho honour of J opening the scor ( > direct from the corner kick. Spurred on by this early reverse the ’Brooke set out to equalise matters and nice work by Jones brought out 7 the saving ability of Chcstnutt. That 3 was a close call. At the other end. 3 Scott had to look lively to keep th? 0 Mills out. In this he was ably assisted o by Woods. The latter gave to Jones, 0 who, working well up the centre, had 0 a "pop” at goal but his elevation was too great.. Ritchie and Duke brought ) the Mills again within shooting dis- ) tancc but the only result was an abot--1 five corner. There mav not have been many of the finer points of football in the game but it was keen and fast Chcstnutt was injured in bringing off a great save, and Mair took his f> place in goal. Duke again got moving and was proving himself a big hand--1 ful for Cotton, who was only beaten by 1 speed. A grew cross by Duke just missed. A minute later Ritchie let fly 0 a great shot only to see Scott in posi- ) tion. Killeen was trying hard to let ’ the players in front of him away but with little success. Maxey had now a ) chance of counting but his shot was charged down and Mills got moving. Ritchie very judiciously put out to Duke, who gave Scott no chance with his final effort. 2 Being two goals down, did not in any » way effect Eastbrooke’s play and I Quinn came very near counting with a nice lob which had Chcstnutt guessing. Only the cross-bar saved th? ’Mills. Quinn again raised the ’Brooke hopes when he beat Tasker nicely and sent across a love?y ball which just j skimmed the bar. "Mills were again ) at Scott’s end where Woods proved J himself a hard man to beat. Coming j right out from a. Crowd of players with i the ball he let his side away, hut Tas- ) ker and Proudfoot were taking no risks ) and kept their forwards well up the field. Bates had a great shot which Scott did well to hold. Upton, coming up well, missed u chance by hesitating and his shot was smothered. A bad ‘ miss bv Cotton let Duke away. With no one to beat but Scott, ho shot wide. Quinn, who was tho only ’Brooke forward to give Chcstnutt any trouble, ! had another try. The ball was in mid- ! field when the interval was called with Eastbrookc two goals down. Eastbrookc re-arranged their team in the second spell. Killeen and Upton coming into the forward line and Maxey and Stokes going back to half. From the kick-off, ’Brooke set about reducing tho leeway but Tasker intervened and Mills made for Scott. Cotton sent them back and Chcstnutt hud shots to save from Wilson and Killeen. Mills, through Ritchie, got down but Morgan hung <»n too long and Woods relieved. Eastbrooko. who were now moving better forward, were round Chcstnutt, who did well to save a hot one from Wilson. A lot of mid-field play followed. Killeen, getting well away, slipped Proudfoot, and drew Chcstnutt out but nut the»ball past an open goal—a let-off f°r tho ’Mills. At the other end Mills secured a ►corner which thov did not improve on. Another corner for Mills caused the ’Brooke some trouble but tho ball was eventually got away and offside spoiled

some good ’Prooko play. From the resultant kick ’Mills were round Scott and Morgan gave him a hot. one to hold. Duke, catching tho rebound, put across goal, but there wore no takers. Eastbrooko wore sent awav bv Jones, who gave to Killeen, to Upton, the ball getting to Wilson, who let drive to find the not. Elated by this success, ’Brooke put on the pressure and Chcstnutt had to fling himself full length to stop one from Killeen. Eastbrooko wore, if anything, doing bettor than Mills at this period. It was no surprise when the ’Brooke equalised. A long drive from Wilson followed and Chcstnutt saved but tho ball went to the feet of the on-rushing Killeen, who hud no difficulty in scoring. It was now a ease of ‘‘pull baker, pull devil,’’ and both sets of plavers wont at it with a will to got the load but. Wood on one side and Chcstnutt on the other relieved their sides. Killeen had an opportunity to give his side the load but his effort was too soft. Shortly after this the final whistle with the scores: , Eastbrooko 2; AT ills 2. Athletic and Thistle. i Those teams served up the finest exhibition of football seen in Wanganui for many a long day The teams lined up as follows: Athletic.—Barron, Thompson, Dear, Wilson, Crumblcy, Thomas, Campbell, Boyack. Beckett, K. Wilson, E. Wilson. Thistle.—Walker, Wade, Mclntyre, Kidd, Gilbert, Dickson. Lovey. Little, j Heath, Thomson, Bain. The referee was Mr F. Philips. Athletic, won tho toss and sot their j opponents to face tho sun. Thistle got away well from the start, and within a couple of minutes had registered a goal from n shot by Heath. This reverse nettled Athletic and they set about the business of equalising in a lively fashion. Thomson, getting well through, was brought down by Thompson when in the act. of shooting. A corner resulted but Bain put. past. A corner taken by Campbell was got rid of. A fine piece of headwork was seen at this period, bringing Thistle out. of a. serious position, no fewer than five players getting their head to the ball -Mclntyre, to Gilbert, to Kidd, to

Little, to Levey. Nice work on the Athletic right by Campbell and Bojack gave R. Wilson a snap at goal. Walker saved but was unable tn hold. E. Wilson ran in and netted, Walker slipping in an effort to recover. 1 Again Athleti«c bore down by the , long-kick and follow-up tactics and E. Wilson scored a nice goal with a fine drooping shot. They did not keep their lead long, however. as Heath equalised for Thistle a minute later. The gam? was fast. Thistle were sticking to the close-passing game while Athletic were giving a fine exhibition of the open game. The result was that Beckett scored for Athletic. Bain sent in a teaser which Barron put over tho bar. Beckett now put over when well placed. Flay now went up-field and Levey, with some tricky play, secured n •corner from which nothing accrued. There was no further scoring when tho interval was called, with the score: — Athletic 3; Thistle 2. When the second half was started the wind had dropped and the sun had gone down. Thistle were soon on the aggressive and were awarded a free kick from whi'ch Dickson scored. Barron did not see tho ball. With the scores equal the game became faster than ever and Walker, Wade and Mclntyre were seen at their best. However, Thistle had now their spell of attacking and Thomson had a well-taken goal, placing Thistle in the lead. A few minutes later some nice play by Levey, Little and Heath saw tho last-named bring the Thistle total to five. Athletic were by no means a spent force as was seen when Beckett reduced Thistle’s lead by one. This was all the scoring, the final figures being: Athletic 4; Thistle 5. School Football. i The following are the results of Saturday’s games:— Primary Schools.— Aramoho 4, Gonvillo 0; burio Hill 3, Gonvillo 3. Grade 3.—Athletic 2, Eastbrookc 0; Marists 4, Thistle «2. Grade 4. —Thistle 1, Marists 1; Ath'eti'c 2, Sen Scouts 0.
