Mr. F. Symes (deputy-Mayor) has made an excellent recovery since undergoing an operation some weeks ago. He is able to see visitors during the day.
Miss Giblin and Miss Howie, both of Wanganui, were appointed to the positions of matron and sub-matron respectively of the Wanganui Girls’ College at a meeting of the Board of Governors on Wednesday.
Guests registered at Foster’s Hotel last night were: —Messrs J. M. Holmos and J. R. Todd (Wellington); R. H. Graham (Auckland); A. C. Ross (Hawera); A. Christensen and A. W. Cliffe (Patea).
The death occurred at Patea on Monday of Mr. Allan James Hill, youngest son of the late Samuel Hill, who for many years was Government Valuer at New Plymouth. The late Mr. Hill, who was only 45 years of age, had been farming in the Patea district for some years.
A Press Association message from Oamaru announces the death of Mr. Ernest Pago Lee, at the age of 69. He was Minister of Justice in the last Massey Ministry and was one of the best-known legal practitioners in the South Island. His death occurred at Queenstown as the result of a seizure.
Mr. P. J. McDavitt, accountant to the Wanganui City gas department, ha-s been appointed assistant town clerk at Palmerston North. There were 130 applicants for the position. Mr. McDavitt joined the staff of the Wanganui Council nine years ago, firstly in the accountant’s department. Later, ho was appointed accountant to the gas department. He takes up his new post on March 1.
Mr. R. E. Cuthbertson, of St. John’s Hill, met with a painful accident on Wednesday morning. While starting the engine of his motor launch the crank handle slipped. The engine threw it up with great force, and it struck Mr. Cuthbertson on the head, inflicting two wounds which necessitated his removal to a private hospital. As a result of the accident he will bo unable to attend business for several days.
Mr. S. K. Sleigh, the Union Steam Ship Company’s manager at Dunedin, and secretary of the compr.ny, and Mr. F. L. Biss, manager at Hobart, will retire on superannuation at the end of February. Mr. J. H. Gilbert, manager at Timaru, is appointed manager at Dunedin. Mr. W. G. Mander, manager for Fiji at Suva, is appointed manager at Timaru. Mr. W. E. Hancock, of the head office staff at Wellington, is appointed manager for Fiji at Suva. Mr. M. W. Horton, recently representative of the company at New York, is appointed manager at Hobart.
Before coming to Wanganui some 30 years ago, Mr F. de IF. Sampson, who passed away at the Wanganui Hospital on Tuesday after a long illness, was Lieutenant-Commander of the Boys’ Institute Cadets in Wellington for a number of years. In the volunteer days in Wanganui he joined the Irish Rifles and held the rank of coloursergeant. At that time he was interested in shooting, winning several competitions. Mr Sampson was connected with several sports bodies, being chairman of tho Wanganui Hockey Association, and was a member of the.Wanganui East Swimming Club. He was also a member of the Northeiji School Committee for a number o z years. Mr Sampson leaves a widow and grown-up family—Messrs G. F. Sampson, F. Sampson, W. Sampson, and Mrs N. Paul (Wanganui) and Miss Marjorie Sampson (Palmerston North) to mourn their loss.
