AT THE RACES
FROCKS ON THE LAWN A fair number of enthusiastic racegoers attended the first day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s autumn meeting, yesterday. The weather was very warm and the sky overcast and at the end of the meeting, light rain fell for a short time. The lawns, which usually present a lovely carpet of green, were parched and almost white with the intense heat of the past few weeks. The fashions were varied, mostly floral georgettes, coin-spot shantungs, ensembles in lace and light materials, chosen for coolness, also shady hatts and gay parosols. Green, in all its different shades, the new blue, browns, reds, lemon and black and white predominate. While a large number favoured summer straw hats, there were many of the new season’s tricornes, “Marie Stuart” and Empress Eugenie hats. Among those present were:— Mrs N. G.
