MAJESTIC THEATRE “Night Nurse,” the much heralded starring vehicle for Barbara Stanwyck a Warner Bros. l production, shows at the Majestic Theatre to-night and Friday at .8 p.m. The piece is based on the sensational novel by Dora Macy. It presents vividly the temptations, fears, loves and deeds of a girl who comes as a probationer to a great city hospital and stays until she becomes not only a nurse—but a woman who saves lives and wins through suffering the one thing women most want in lifeMiss Stanwyck is supported by Ben Lyon, Joan Blondell, Charles Winninger, Charlotte Merriam, Edward Nugent, Allan Lane, Blanche Frederici, Vera Lewis, Ralfe Harolde, Clarke Gable, Walter McGrail, and Betty May. William Wellman, who directed “Wings” and “The Public Enemy,” directed “Night Nurse.” Barbara Stanwyck, whose work in “Illicit” is remembered by all theatre goers, does the most effective work of her career as the Lora Hart of “Night Nurse.” PERSONAL Miss Ella Gibbs, aged 17 years, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Gibbs, of Utiku, passed away at the Taihape Hospital on Tuesday after a long and painful illness borne with great fortitude. Possessed of a bright and charming personality, deceased was exceedingly popular, and her untimely death will be deeply regretted by a wide circle of friends. The funeral -will be held at Taihape at 2-30 p.m. to-day (Thursday). GENERAL NEWS In answer to an inquiry the Rangitikei County overseer (Mr. J. McDonald) stated yesterday that he fully expected the new Hautapu River bridge to be open for traffic within a month’s time. At present twenty men are engaged on excavation work at the bridge site, preparing the approaches. After the new structure has been completed the old bridge will be pulled down. A euchre party was held in the Railway Hall on Tuesday evening and attracted over 50 card players. Seventeen games were played and the prizes were won by Mrs. Seager (13j games) and Mr. N. Hagan (12 games). Messrs W. A. Smith and G. Wilsher were in charge. A dance followed the euchre party, the music being supplied by Mrs. Seager, while extras were played by Mr. ATaylor and Mr. F. Buckley. The tug-of-war at the railway picnic held at Ngaurukehu, during the weekend, resulted in a victory for the Tai hape Municipal Band’s team. Mataroa were second. The winning team comprised Messrs D. Marsh, E. Smith, GWoodcock, E. Wilkins, J. Siddle, W. Godfrey. A five-year-old cream pony with saddle and bridle complete, was sold for £lO at the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Distributing Company’s sale at Taihape yesterday. A flower show and bazaar was held in the Town Hall yesterday under the auspices of the Taihape Plunket Society. The official opening was performed by the Mayor, Mr. L. B. H de Lautour. A list of the prize-winners will appear in to-morrow’s issue. TAIHAPE DAIRY COMPANY The Taihape Co-operative Dairy Co. Ltd. will pay out £5035 14s Id on. 20th inst. for January supplies of butter-fat, the payment being at the rate of 82f per lb. The pay-out for the corresponding month last year totalled £4547 16s 4d, at the rate of 9d per lb- The output for last month amounted to 77| tons, which represents an increase of 8| tons on the quantity of butter manufactured in January, 1931. The supply of butter-fat to the factory lately has been decreasing rapidly as a result of the dry weather, but an improvement is anticipated after Monday’s rainfall. A further downpour however, is urgently needed to remedy the general drop in production resultant on recent drought conditions.
