MARTON SWIMMING CARNIVAL The postponed swimming carnival of the Marton Club will be held in the Municipal Baths on Tuesday evening next, commencing at 7.45 p.nt sharp and fresh entries are being received for the events which close this (Saturday) evening with the secretary (Mr. J. C. S. Bush), at Marton. It is hoped that the Wanganui Swimming Club will accord the same splendid support as at the previous carnival. All entries and free, competitors paying for mission at the door. The programme is as follows: 25 yards schoolboys’ and schoolgirls’ dash, 50 and 75 yards handicaps (men), 50 and 75 yards handicaps (ladies), 50 yards handicaps (boys and girls under 17 years), 75 yarus breaststroke handicap, ladies’ and men’s dives, ribbon dive, dual and four-men relay races. First and second trophies in all events. During the week a new springboard has been erected and the baths have been renovated and painted and all that is required for a record meeting is a fine evening. The Wanganui Centro has allotted the following district championships to affiliated clubs:—Raetihi, intermediate boys’ and girls’ championships; Marton, junior boys’ and girls’ championships; Taihape, 50 and 100 yards senior ladies’ and men’s championships, free style. MOTOR-CYCLE MEETING SPLENDID ENTRIES RECEIVED Splendid entries have been received for the combined motor-cycle race meets to be held by tne Rangitikei and Manawatu Motor-Cycle Clubs on the Marton Racecourse on Friday, January 22 (Anniversary Day). The entries include all the cracK riders of the Dominion, notably Percy Coleman, Tui Morgan, Alby Lemon, Harry Mangham. Howard Tolley, Eric Whittle, Oscar Linduis, D. K. Collison, W. Viggars and twenty-five other handicap riders. The course is in first-class order and fast times should be registered. The chief event on the programme is the New Zealand Middleweight Championship, for which all the leading riders have entered. The first event will start at 12 noon. Refreshments and hot water can be obtained on the grounds, and it. is hoped that the fixture will receive the support of the sporting public. Handicaps will appear early next week. A special train will leave Palmerston North at 10 a.m., arriving at Marton at 11.37 a.m., returning from Marton at 6.30 p.m. CRICKET HUNTERVILLE V. MARTON This afternoon Hunterville eleven will play Marton on the Domain. The following team has been selected to represent Hunterville: W. Hayward, H. Towers, S. Powell, .T. Hallwood, RBaker, C. Bowiek, L. Gilbertson, L. Whetton, W. Cook, V. Pratt and LJ. Thompson or A. W. Porter. The following will represent Marton: C. B. Fullerton-Smith, Tidy, Birch, Waldin, Williams, Parkes, Melndoe, Harper. McLeod, Sladden, Openshaw; 12 man, McNamara. Cars leave White Hart corner at 12.30.

NOVICE SNOOKER TOURNAMENT The final of the novice snooker tournament was played in Rayner’s billiard saloon on Thursday evening when R. Bland beat his opponent, E. Calkin, in the first two games out of three LAWN TENNIS TOURNAMENT The annual Y'ankee tournament, open to all members and visitors, will be played on the Marton Lawn Tennis Club courts on Anniversary Day. VALEDICTORY Member? of the staff of the local Post Office gathered together last Wednesday evening to bid farewell to Mr. J. Ward, who is on transfer to Hamilton. Mr. Porteous, the postmaster, on behalf of those present, expressed regret at losing such a good officer, and added that he had no doubt that Mr. Ward would do well in his new surroundings. Mr. Matthews and Mr. Holmes both spoke briefly, touching on the loss the local office would sustain in the departure of Mr. Ward. “I could not have wished for a better junior,” said Mr. Matthews. “Mr. Ward was always ready for the most arduous duties, and when called upon in an emergency, would give of his best willingly.” Mr. Porteous then presented Mr. Ward with a shaving outfit, on behalf of the staff. In a short reply Mr. Ward thanked those present for their kindly references to his services, and added that he had enjoyed his period of association with the local staff and expressed the hope that he would not lose touch with them altogether. THE CIVIC THEATRE “SUNNY” All of Marilyn Miller’s art as an actress, a dancer, and a singer come to the fore in “Sunny,” the First National and X’itaphone version of her famous musical comedy which ran for three years on Broadway.
