FASCINATING CRAFT FOR HOME WORKERS

The busy housewife or business wo|man is always glad to have one or two •memorandum books in which s he can jot notes of the things she must do. It is surprising what pretty covers you can make for these notebooks out of pieces of vellum or parchment. Then, with the aid of a paintbrush and paints, you can complete a charming as well as useful gift. Both vellum and parchment are receptive to colour and even the veriest amateurs can devise attractive designs which will make the gift of a memorandum book doubly acceptable. Before you apply paint to vellum the surface should be rubbed over with French chalk. See that the powder is worked well into the surface or else you will find that the colours will not stay fast. Poster colours are simple to use and parchment responds to their application. You can buy clear, rich colours in them in practically every shade and you do not have to mix "them with either oil or water. As a finish to your little notebooks you can punch holes all around the edges and twine brightly coloured braid or narrow strips of leather through them. You will have to use one or the other at the top of the booklet in order to keep the covers together. Coloured string is a good alternative. If you are good at lettering you can mark down one side of the book its purpose, such as “Books to Read,” “Things to Buy,” “Addresses.” Another idea is to inscribe the name of the friend to whom you propose to send your gift
