PORT OF WANGANUI
DAIRY PRODUCE SHIPMENTS. MR. VEITCH’S EXPLANATION. Matters which led up to the agre® ment between the New Zealand Dairy Produce Control" Board and the Overseas Shipping Companies with regard to tho shipment of dairy produce, particularly in connection with the clause which had penalised the Wanganui Coo! Stores, were raised at Mr. W. A. Veitch’s meeting at GonviHe on Tuesday night at question time. The candidate was asked what activity he hud taken to prevent “theft of trade from Wanganui.” In reply, he said that the contract for shipment of produce was made at Home and neither the Government, nor the Dairy Board, he believed, had any say. The shipping companies, tor some reason or other, had a grievance against the Wanganui Harbour Board and they insisted on the clause referred to going in the contract. When it became known the speaker assisted to fight the matter aad the Dairy Board had a promise that hen the contract came to be renewed . mi matter would probably be altered. When that time came the member for Wanganui and the Wanganui Harbour Board would bo very active, That would be in about 18 months’ time. Mr. Veitch added that he had been an opponent ot the Dairy Control Board from the beginning. He had taken the platform and spoken against its forma tion. When it was formed, of course, which was under the Reform Government, he had accorded it full support, but if he had the power he would wipe • it out to-morrow.
