DEAN INGE—OPTIMIST
MARRIAGE A SUCCESS Religion is as vigorous as 50 years ago .... marriage is in no danger . . . science brings gifts of freedom and beauty . . . physical maladies will be gradually exterminated. These were the peaks of optimism climbed by Dean Inge in a broadcast address recently, states a London writer. “The large majority of marriages are successful, and there are many to affirm that married affection is one of the best things in life,” he said. “There is, of course, more love outside marriage nowadays, and that some of the old principles have lost their authority is shown by the fall in the birth-rate from 36 to 16 per thousand. Dean Inge was giving an introductory address on the “Modern Dilemma” series of talks. “Four things,” ho said, “will always stay with us —the kingdom of absolute value - , the Christian religion, art and science. “Science will greatly modify civilisation .... It will give us leisure which we will be wise to devote to the creation of something useful and beautiful, so building up an art and craft on a non-economic basis, and restoring the joy in work which the Industrial Revolution has done much to destroy. “When petty international squabbles decline, the League of Nations will be able to launch successful attacks on disease after disease, until they are conquered like hydrophobia. “The new freedom of the body which is sweeping Europe is a splendid omen of increasing health. “Eugenics must conic. It faces now a mountain of prejudice, but its influence for health and happiness must extend. ”
