BATHERS RESCUED
PERIL IN THE SURF MAN AND WOMAN SAVED PALMERSTON N., Nov. 24. Two bathers, Mr. F. N. Bosenbeck, of Ashhurst, and Miss D. Whibley, of Palmerston North, had a narrow escape from drowning at Foxton Beach shortly after two o’clock on Sunday afternoon. Conditions were somewhat boisterous during the day, a rough and dangerous sea breaking along the beach. Under the circumstances, the members of the Foxton Surf and Life-Saving Club de cided to devote the day to work on their pavilion, which is in course of erection on the sand dunes overlooking the beach. About two o’clock, however, with :he tide on the ebb and practically out, the two bathers entered the water, but they had not been there long before they were swept into a hole and got into difficulties. Their cries for help were heard by members of the Surf Club, -who rushed down to the beach. Forming a chain, they waded in, and were successful in reaching the bathers. When rescued Mr. Rosenbock was in a state of collapse and resuscitation had to be carried out on the beach. Miss Whibley, however, was not in such an extreme state of exhaustion, as she had been assisted by Mr. Rosenbock before the rescue was made. Both bathers were soon able to proceed to their homes. Members of the club speak highly of Mr. Rosenbock’s actions. When the bathers found they wore in difficulties he supported Miss Whibley until such time as the rescue was effected.
