COLLIERY DISASTER
UTMOST GALLANTRY. TRIBUTE TO RESCUERS. [ British Official Wireless. ] RUGBY, Nov. 23. Tho affected part of the Bentley pit is being sealed up. The utmost gallantry was displayed by tho rescuers and, when volunteers were asked for, hundreds of miners almost fought for an opportunity to risk their lives on behalf of their buried com rades. The disaster is one of the worst in Britain since tho war. Tribute to tho heroic rescue work in the colliery explosion near Doncaster was paid in tho House of Commons by the Mines Minister (Mr. Foot) who said that a public inquiry into the causes would be hold as soon as the circumstances allowed. STORIES OF GALLANTRY. HOW ONE MAN WAS SAVED. LONDON, Nov. 23. The heroism of Mr. S. Temperly, as-sistant-surveyor at the Bentley colliery, was revealed at the inquest. Tho secretary of the local branch of the Miners’ Association said: “With stories of gallantry on all sides, I particularly desire to draw attention to Mr. Temperly. Immediately ho knew that two men were left alive, without waiting for tho rescue apparatus, he •lashed into the blazing inferno and brought one out.”
