BULLS
ANOTHER PIONEER PASSES. The death occurred at Wanganui Hospital on Wednesday morning o. Mrs. Elizabeth Thomas, an old and highly esteemed resident of this district. The late Mrs. Thomas was in her 72nd. year, and in recent years had not enjoyed the best of health, but it was not until this week that her condition of health became so bad that an operation was deemed advisable, and she was removed to the hospital for that purpose. In spite of all that could be done for her, she passed away as stated above.
Except for a short period spent in the Ruahine district, the late Mrs. Thomas resided in Rangitikei for practically all of her life, her parents, the lato Mr. and Mrs. T. F. Richardson, being amongst the very earliest settlers here, farming at “Sandridge,’’ and later on at “Karaka Terrace," Ohakea. The late Mrs. Thomas was a popular figure in her younger days, being an export horsewoman and taking a leading part in social affairs, but subsequently an injury to a leg caused her to retire from active participation in such matters. She boro her illness with great fortitude. Her husband predeceased her some 14 years ago, but she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Harry Ellery, and five sons, Albert, Frederick, John, Thomas and Arthur, and sixteen grandchildren, all of whom reside in the district. Interment takes place at the Fraser private cemetery, Parewanui Road, to-day. BULLS TENNIS CLUB. Bulls Tennis Club opened the season on Wednesday afternoon in fine but windy weather. There was a large attendance of members and visitors, and the courts were in perfect order. The president, Mr W. H. Olson, in declaring the courts open for play, paid tributes to the splendid work of the retiring president (Mr. G. D. Flower) and of the energetic secretary (Mr. F. F. Ralfe), to whom much of the success of the club was attributable. A progressive doubles tournament followed, the winners being Mrs. Mansell and Mr Einam (Palmerston North), and the runners-up were Miss Ralfe and Mr. F. F. Ralfe. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the lady members.
DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB.
A meeting of the newly-formed Bulls Defence Rifle Club was held in Clifton Hall on Wednesday evening. There was a good attendance of members, as well as representatives of outside rifle clubs.
The election of officers resulted as follows: Patron, Mr J. Linklater, M.P.; president, Mr. J. B. Robins; vice-presi-dent, Mr. C. M. Broughton; hon. secretary, Mr. 8. R. Hodges; lion, treasurer, Mr. D. Lundy; committee, Messrs. J. B. Robins, C. M. Broughton, S. R. Hodges, D. Lundy, W. Tarrant, L. Hoddleston and H. Meads.
The subscription fee was fixed at fifteen shillings, and every effort is being made to make the club a strong one. The range has been put in order, and new targets and target shed erected. It is probable that the opening date will be in about two weeks* time. Territorials and young riflemen will have opportunities of obtaining free rifles, providing that they comply with the Defence Regulations. The secretary will give all the necessary information to those wishing to join.
