VOLUNTEER TRAINING

NOTES OF THE DAY.

On Thursday of last week the Commanding Officer, the 0.C., the M.G. Company, and the Adjutant paid a visit of inspection to the M,.rton Platoon. The Commanding Officer was highly pleased with the efficiency and general turn-out of the Marton Volunteers, and complimented Lieut. Low and the platoon on its excellent showing. Marton has exceeded its quota, and it has been decided to raise a portion of the H.Q. Wing from Marton in addition. These will be transport details, and should possess a knowledge of horses. There will be no difficulty in raising the necessary numbers with the essential qualifications. A party of the Marton platoon pro poses to visit Wanganui next Saturday to take part in the firing of the Lewis gun course. Marton is handicapped through having no range of its own, but this is not going to deter the enthusiastic volunteers from firing the course. It is hoped also that the Marton volunteers will pay a social visit to their Wanganui confreres later in the year. The Lewis gun platoon is having a half-day parade on Saturday at the Putiki range. Information has been received to the effect that Corporal W. J. Craig of “A” Company has been successful in the recent examination for first appointment to a commission in the Territorial Air Force. Corporal Craig is to be congratulated on being the first territorial to qualify under the new conditions. The strength of the regiment is at present 13 officers, 131 other ranks. There are still vacancies in Nos. 1 and 2 (M.G.) Platoons and No. 1 Group (signals) of the H.Q.
