FURTHER INDUCEMENTS “Sydney will become the Monte Carlo of the Southern seas if the Lang Ministry is in office long enough,” says the correspondent of the Melbourne Argus. “The great queue at the State lottery offices still commands attention. Further inducements are being held out to increase the interest in it. Martin Place may yet be filled with throngs of men and women waiting to place 5s 3d or whatever the exact amount may be, in the State coffers in the hope of receiving thousands of pounds, or at worst a few hundreds. ‘Why work?’ some ask, when there is the prospect, not of ‘bread and circuses,’ as in ancient times, but of the dole and a lottery ticket, which are sufficient for many. ’ ’
