THE SKIRL OF THE PIPES

THE skirl of the pipes preceded the monster Marlborough demonstration when it valiantly marched on Parliament. What a wonderful influence have the pipes! First they have the tendency to make men march with a steady lilting tread. A tread that is light, hut is firm and inflexible. It is the step that men of resolution use, and using increase their resolution. Battles have been won by the resolution, the fire, and the determination inspired by the pipes. How many border raids were inspired by the skirl thereof. It must have been a fine sight to have seen that populous band of Marlborough marauders marching down Lambton Quay, determined on making a raid on the Treasury. Its pleasing to know that the fine old buccaneering spirit sitll lives, and that freebooting, while it has changed in its methods since the blue bonnets marched over the Border, can still feel the inspiration for their business in the music which so seriously disturbed the Merchant of Venice.
