WOMAN YACHT MASTER
FIRST IN NEW ZEALAND. AUCKLAND, Oct. 10. A certificate as a yacht master in New Zealand waters has been granted to Mrs. A. E. Richmond, of Auckland, who qualified at the Alarine Department’s examination in Auckland ‘ yesterday. Airs Richmond has the honour of being tho first woman to gain the certificato in New Zealand, no other woman having sat for the examination. Her yachting experience was obtained in the yacht belonging to her husband, Captain J. W. R. Richmond, of the Taniaki Yacht Club. Besides sailing experience, a qualified yacht master must possess a knowledge of general seamanship, sextant work, the rule of tho road, tho receiving of signals by morse and semaphore and a knowledge of tho international code of signals. Tho navigation problems to bo passed include determining latitude and longitude by tho sun and stars, deviation of the compass, the setting of courses to counteract currents and various tidal questions. The numerous subjects require (considerable study and they were mastered by Mrs. Richmond in about six months. Another successful candidate for a yacht master’s certificate at the samo examination was Mr. R. Webb, of Northcotc.
