FATAL GUN SHOT
MAN KILLED AT AERODROME That live ammunition had been used in testing a Lewis gun magazine was revealed at the inquest at. Grimsby, England, lately on Wilfred George Appleton, a naval telegraphist, stationed at North Cotes aerodrome. Appleton, who was sitting in a hut talking to comrades, was shot through the head by two bullets which came through the wall from the armoury adjoining. Flying-Olliccr Erie Cecil Bates said he was testing a new Lewis gun magazine in the. armoury. Owing to the oily state of the gun handle it slipped and two rounds were fired, 'rhe bullets passed through the armoury wall into an adjoining hut. In answer to the coroner, witness said the use of live ammunition was not essential, though perhaps it gave a better than dummy ammunition. The wrouer said that whether
dummy would have done as well for the test woald not doubt bo considered in another quarter. He returned a verdict of “Accidental death.”
