BOROUGH COUNCIL The following reports were submitted at the monthly meeting of the Borough Council last night. Those present were tne Mayor (Mr F. Ramsbottom), Councillors C. R. Honeyfield, A. T. Christensen, F. Naismith, G. Pettigrew, T. Scott and C. H. Carey. Streets Supervsor’a Report.—The lower end of Livingstone Street has been sanded and also 10 yards of pit metal placed on Egmont Street South. Patching, where necessary, has been done on Suffolk Street footpath, Aitchison’s crossing, the filling at the pound, and Scotland Street. A good amount of time has been spent on the footpath on the Beach Road during the month. Sumps, rubbish, Main Street and the carting of oil has had regular attention. Work for the coming month would include continuation of the Beach Road footpath. Engineer’s Report “ During the month of September both plants continued to run in a satisfactory manner and nu interruptions occurred in the service. The water supply at the hydro kept up very well, the rainfall being 4.99 ins. for the month. The usual running repairs only were carried out at the diesel station. Several visits were paid to the hydro station and each time everything was found to be in first-class order. 4 ‘Lines.—The usual maintenance has been attended to and surveys and plans made of work necessary in connection with the change-over. ‘ ‘ Wiring.—The usual repairs have Deen attended to and in addition three heating and two lighting points have been added to the system. Material for decorating for Jubilee Week was also overhauled and made ready. ‘ * Meters.—Three meters were changed and five additional heating meters were installed. ‘ * Water Department. —Approximately 1,301,000 gallons of water have been pumped for a consumption of 4204 inits, compared with 1,189,000 gallons ind 3783 units for {September, 1930, an increase of 112,000 gallons and 421 units respectively. One broken service was located and repaired in Norfolk {Street. In conjunction with meter reading an inspection of tapt was made and 15 taps were found to be leaking. Instructions have been given to Lave these attended to. The increase in tne consumption of water, especially on account of the wet weather experienced, is difficult to account for. The mains have been traversed tn try and find any suspicious spots whtie leans are occurring, but without much success. Until all the lead connections have been replaced a number of breaks are liable to occur and are difficult to locate for some time, as the water is absorbed by the sand until it breaks tne surface some time later. However, the figures for the 9 months’ period of 1931, compared with other years are as follows: 929 40,998 ri*3o 39,519 <931 33,189 This shows a gradual decrease. No trouble has been experienced with the bores, which are giving an adequate flow. ’ ’
