NOR -WEST GALE
CANTERBURY PLAIN SWEPT WIDESPREAD DAMAGE DONE HALL TIED DOWN WITH ROPES [ Per Press Association, I CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 11. A nor' west gale blew over the Canterbury plains on Saturday and did widespread damage to pine plantationand caused interruptions of power am telephone lines at Darfield, where the worst rage of the gale was felt. 11 was deemed advisable to tie down with ropes the memorial hall in which a flower show r was being held. Power lines were interrupted in part? of Canterbury until this afternoon. The storm reached Christchurch, but only as a strong wind. The force of th* gale was spent before reaching th< coast. ASHBURTON COUNTY SUFFERS [ Per Pres* Association. ] ASHBURTON, Oet. 10. A north-west gale, the most violent since October. 1911, raged throughout the county to-day. Many power and telephone wires brought down, and great damage was done to plantations. Motorists had narrow esepaes from falling trees and wires. In one instance a cow was killed by the snapping of an electric power wire. Newly sow r n paddocks were denuded of soil. There are now signs of an abatement.
